Episode Notes

Sorry it's taken me so long to make an episode! In this, the first real episode of Audpod, I'm going to begin by telling you a little bit about my life.

Episode Transcription

AUDREY: Hi, my name is Audrey. A couple years ago, I decided to start a podcast with a little help from my dad. If you listened to the trailer, I said that the first episode was coming “soon.” Well, that didn’t really pan out! I've been wanting to work on making an actual episode ever since then. Personally, I think we can blame my dad for the long delay. I kept asking him when we could work on it … but you know how dads can be.

DAD: Hey, it was a busy couple years!

AUDREY: Yep, that's Dad. You might hear him on the show from time to time. Anyway, thanks to all of you who kept waiting for this episode to be released. Because here it is!

Well, I think I should kick things off by telling you a little bit about myself. So let's see …

I’m now 10 and a half years old and I live in Texas. Some of my favorite things include camping, hiking, and playing sports. I recently stopped playing soccer and decided to focus more on swimming and running. In fact, I just ran a 5K race, which is a little more than 3 miles. I won my age group and had a great time running with a really fast kid who I met at a race last year. Then we hung out afterward and went to IHOP to eat pancakes with her and her mom. My best 5K time so far is about 25 and a half minutes, and the farthest I've ever run is 9 miles.

I especially love running with my dad, because we can talk about anything and everything on our runs. He says that one day I'll look back at our runs together as fond memories, and I think he might be right.

I've also done a few kids' triathlons and even won one this year. I'm looking forward to competing in my first grownups' triathlon soon. And I also started swimming year-round with a team that practices right across the street from my house. One of my best friends from my summer swim team also joined, and we're having a great time swimming together—and getting a whole lot better.

Another thing I love to do is learn and write essays in my 5th grade class. I just wrote an essay about the book Don Quixote that my teacher said was my "best work yet." And I love animals. I have a cat named Slinky and a dog named Olive who love to play together, despite the two species' reputations. Dad was really worried the dog would eat the cat when I got Slinky for my birthday. But nope! They also sit on the dog bed together, which is super cute. Olive is a blue heeler mix. Blue heelers are herding dogs native to Australia. In fact, if you have ever heard of the cartoon Bluey, the main characters are a family of heelers.

I guess my cat is what you would call a tabby cat. They're very common but still great. Tabby cats are often spotty and/or stripy, and my cat has spots on his tummy, which are so cute! I love both my pets so much. You'll probably hear from them in later episodes.

CAT: Meow!

DOG: Woof! Woof!

AUDREY: Don't be fooled—that's not Slinky and Olive. Those are just some sound effects that Dad put in.

You'll probably also hear from my friends and family. We have a pretty small family, mainly just me, my mom, and my dad. But we have some relatives in faraway places like England, New Zealand, and Ohio.

SPEAKER 2: We live on a little island. We have lots of people come and see us. But the weather is … pretty bad.

SPEAKER 3: I like it because it's like a little town.

SPEAKER 4: It's lovely having the girls here. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

AUDREY: Those ones were real—they're my actual relatives!

When I'm talking about my friends, I'll be using pseudonyms unless I get permission to use their real names. Just FYI.

Anyway, on Audpod I'll be talking a lot more about my life, and we'll also be discussing science, art, nature, and more! In these short episodes, I hope you’ll learn about a variety of things while also having fun. If you are listening to this podcast as a teenager or an adult, don’t worry! Even if this podcast is geared more toward kids, anyone can listen to it. I'll be the host—that's why it's called Audpod—while my dad will be doing the editing until I learn how.

And Slinky will play a very important role by entertaining me while I work on scripts.

CAT: Meowwwww!

So yeah, Audpod is a podcast by a kid for kids. I hope you keep following our podcast because new episodes will continue to be released. (For real this time.)
